COREEN ABBOTT, ceramics
2019 Artist in Residence

After 20 years of making ceramics using high-fire clays and kilns resulting in earthy colors and serendipitous results, I became entranced by Italian Majolica. After returning from living in Italy, I began focusing on color relationships, optical effects and precise designs creating an optical rhythm. This production process has become a form of meditation leading my mind past everyday thoughts and into new interior territories. This in turn has led to producing figurative sculpture. The figures remain neutral other than in stance and gesture. Each life-size figure or grouping acts as a catalyst for viewers to mirror their own experiences, memories or state of being onto the piece.

Sometimes I look at my work and realize it looks like two different people made it. This only reminds me of the multitude of layers and dimensions each of us hold inside.
