JUSTINE JOHNSON, fiber arts
2019 Artist in Residence

I look for the universal in the particular and the connections between different times, places and cultures, using a complex, abstract personal investigation guided by intuition. My work is diverse – painting, works on paper, sculpture, Japanese textiles, and artist films – but always closely linked to process and understanding of materials including their history and connection to culture.

Currently I am exploring ancient methods of plant dyeing techniques, Earth pigments as well as using organic sugar fermentation to make Indigo, and ruminating on the consequent resonance in society, nature, space and time.

The Mendocino area holds a special place for me, as a child growing up in Santa Rosa we would often visit the North Coast and I have always felt a deep connection to the landscape and after spending 30 years studying and working in Japan, Hong Kong and London/Wales I not only bring my experience, knowledge and skills but am inspired by memory, place and time, of being displaced and returning. I am working with the idea of ‘roots and wings.’
