WILL MALLER, fine art
2019 Professional Artist in Residence

Will MallerI've had a love of painting since childhood, with art being first a way of staying out of trouble, then a way of getting into trouble, then just a natural part of who I am. My work has always begun with the immediacy of observation and a representational impulse. Then on to the design principles of line, shape, value, color and light, with varying degrees of abstraction, to arrive at yet another visualization. Fused into the process is my struggle and delight in the creative process. My artistic efforts across many years define my representational beginnings, trace the passages of abstraction, and define a body of work that has a very personal reality. Each painting begins as an invitation, proceeds as an adventure, and ends as a gift—whether a joy in itself or a lesson learned, whether just for me or to be shared with others.

ABOUT WILL
Will Maller began his formal study of art at the Walker Museum in Minneapolis at the age of 14 and in the last few years has done professional studies with Huihan Liu, Albert Handel, and Bob Gerbracht. After earning his degree from the University of Minnesota and the Minnesota State University in Mankato, he established his Minneapolis business, Maller Design, Inc. In 1986, he followed major clients to California where he has become a well-established local artist and instructor, winning numerous awards in various media.  Shows included the Society of Watercolor Artists 26th and 27th Art Exhibitions; the 14th International Society of Experimental Artists Exhibition, as well as figurative exhibitions in San Francisco and New York. His focus on landscapes in oil led to the highlight of being the Grand Prize Purchase Award for Paint the Parks 2010, after his earlier selection for a commissioned painting for Pinnacles National Park. As one of the 50 finalists in Southwest Art Magazine’s “21 National Artists over 31,” Maller was noted as “an artist to watch.”

Most of Maller’s focus in the last few years has been in plein air, winning First Place People’s Choice Award at the Napa Valley Museum’s “Northern Views: California Painting in the Plein Air Tradition.” Numerous other juried shows and awards earned him Signature Membership with the International Plein Air Painters in 2010, and in 2014 he became a Signature Member of both the National Oil and Acrylics Painters Society and the Outdoor Painters Society. In 2014 he won the Artists Choice Award at the Los Gatos National Juried Plein Air Show. From 2011 to 2016, Maller has been making the competitive plein air circuit, being juried into national competitions in Los Gatos and Carmel in California and also Dallas, Taos, Telluride and Aspen. He also enjoys being a plein air instructor to many local artists.
