Oils have texture, sumptuous color and blend beautifully. They are forgivable by nature which makes for a more relaxed painting experience. Prepare to enjoy this two-day workshop which will start with Erin quickly doing small demonstrations where you will learn volumes about paint application, nuances of value and color, and telling the best story using the fewest elements. You will learn to shift your thinking from “Foreground, Middle Ground and Background” to “Shapes, Values and Edges,” while enjoying Erin’s lighthearted manner and way of seeing in full spectrum color.
Feel free to work with a brush or palette knife, but Erin will emphasize the knife in this workshop. One-on-one interaction is of utmost importance and critiquing will take place throughout the day on an individual basis. The workshop will close with a time of gathering together to view the work as a group and to share various highlights of the experience.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Born in 1957, ERIN DERTNER’s career began under her mother’s tutelage and has continued through the summer workshop format over the past 32 years with the Mendocino Art Center being her first. She has also enjoyed many teaching opportunities both here and abroad and watercolors, oils and acrylics have all made their way into her satchel. Her current focus is light infused impressionistic oil landscapes when she can portray the cool shadows of the early morning or those that fall long and warm in the evening. Many of her pieces have been accepted and awarded in a variety of juried exhibitions over the years, and she has a keen eye for choosing award winning paintings when called upon to judge art competitions. She has been exhibiting in galleries for the past 30 years and original works are represented in Mendocino, Carmel, St. Helena, Ojai, Sacramento, Lahaina and Boulder, as well as in her own gallery and frame shop in Fort Bragg, and is also widely used on a variety of gift items from woven wall tapestries to serving trays and note cards. According to Erin, “There is no better life than to study the world with paintbrush in hand and a heart full of love and gratitude.”
