Students will be shown how to construct an inexpensive but powerful DIY galvanic etching tank using acid free safe solutions and a battery charger. Because this is NOT an acid based etching process, there is a wide range of materials that can be used as a resist. Oil based ink pens, rubber stamp ink and stamps, vinyl, and PNP paper are some of the materials that can easily be used as “the resist” or “mask.” PNP paper is use to transfer digital images of your own artwork, black and white photographs and copyright free digital graphics to your metal. Once your imagery is applied to a piece of copper or silver, it is then attached to the battery charger and submerged into a tank for electrochemical etching. In less than an hour, the unmasked areas of the metal will be sharply etched by electrolysis. The etched sheets can then be formed into jewelry including earrings, bracelets, pendants belt buckles, etc. Students are encouraged to bring in their own black and white graphics or photographs that can be used in this workshop.

The galvanic etching system used in the workshop can be easily set-up in a home studio and is:

Fast: Useable etched metals in one hour or less.

Clean: A clean image is created since there is little or no undercutting or degradation of the resist.

Green: An acid free non-caustic bath is used that can be reused repeatedly for years that poses little or no hazard to the artist.
