Upcoming Fine Art Classes
Fine Art Department
Instructor: Mark Eanes
”The attractiveness of art work. It is adventurous, strenuous and joyful!”
— Agnes Martin
The joy of working with collage and mixed media is how the process allows for experimentation, layering, and serendipitous orchestration of shape, color and pattern. Mark Eanes will provide students with in-depth instruction of color mixing, mark-making and strategies to create rich and harmonious designs that reflect each person’s unique creative voice.
Whether working from observation or abstractly there are three important concepts to explore:
Understanding Abstraction (freedom of representational qualities)
The emphasis will be on the process over the product. Students will leave the workshop with several completed works of art, but more importantly, a renewed and enriched sense of adventure and confidence in how to tackle the blank surface.
Day one will involve students engaging in rigorous painting exercises, with a focus on composition, design, and devising personal strategies for understanding color. Color mixing and historical perspective will be an essential part of the work. Students will learn how to mix secondary and tertiary colors, split complimentary charts, as well as earth tones, skin tones, and a variety of grays, both warm and cool. Instructional texts will be discussed and recommended.
Day two will be devoted to pushing the work, requiring more time and layers of thought and activity. There will be many examples of other artists to view and discuss, and time will be devoted to personal critiques of students' work.
Day three we will explore other color mixing strategies+ exercises, and work on more advanced compositions. For those who wish to work from observation, additional projects and exercises will be presented.
