Do you love the crackle of traditional batik, but have been put off by its toxic fumes, and arduous wax removal process? Unlike traditional bees wax or paraffin, sustainable soy wax has a lower melting point, and does not produce toxic fumes. Explore mark-making using both traditional and simple commonplace tools to create your multi-colored crackled masterpieces using fiber reactive dyes on multiple 12”x12” samples in this fun directed yet exploratory workshop.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
SUSAN ELSE uses cloth not as a flat surface but as a wild flexible skin for three-dimensional objects. Her work has developed in tandem with the art quilt movement, but she is one of the few artists making figurative sculpture – often incorporating sound, light, and movement – from this medium. Susan uses cloth to create an alternate universe, and the resulting work is full of contradictions: it is whimsical, edgy, mundane, surreal, and engaging, all at once. Each piece tells a story, but the narrative is always open to interpretation. The power and beauty of the patterned cloth surface play off the form and content of the work, and the result is a dynamic seesaw of meanings and possibilities.
She started this work in 1999, when she added 3D elements to a flat art quilt. Susan has shown nationally and internationally since then, with many solo shows in museums and galleries. Her work is in public and private collections, and she has completed many commissioned pieces. Her teaching is now limited to working with individuals and small groups in a studio setting.
