In this workshop we'll take a classic approach to drawing and painting a botanical subject – from study to finished work. Traditional botanical art, with a history that goes back hundreds of years, involves accuracy as well as artistic technique and creativity. But you don't need to be a botanist, and artists at all levels are welcome in this class (some drawing experience is a plus). We'll go through a process of observation, drawing, composing, color mixing, and techniques of watercolor brushwork particular to botanical art. It's an approach that brings out the beauty in detail and leads to a new perception of our plant subjects.
Class time will include specific instruction with ample handouts and demonstrations to guide you as you work on your own composition. You'll get plenty of individual attention as you draw and paint, to challenge and encourage you at your own level of skill.
We'll draw and paint interesting and beautiful botanical subjects of the season. You may bring a plant subject of your choice – live plant material, not just photographs – or you may choose to work with botanical specimens that will be provided.
