The ancient process of lost wax casting has been around for over 5700 years and is still used today to make jewelry, tableware and other adornments. Essentially any shape can be transformed from wax into metal. In this class we will explore the basics of the lost wax process from start to finish. Students will learn how to work with various wax tools to create wearable, sculptural, or functional objects. Basic wax forming techniques include the use of carving tools, an alcohol lamp, electric wax pens and high speed rotary Dremels.
After creating a wax model, students will be shown how to invest with high temperature silica plaster and run a programmable burn-out kiln. Casting will then be done with the same tabletop Vacuum Machine that we invested with! Students can expect to come out of the class with one to two finished pieces.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
TREVI ALOHILANI PENDRO was born in Los Angeles and grew up on the small island of Alameda, California. Trevi always knew she would be an artist, beginning with incessant drawings as an child. In elementary school, she was inspired by architect Frank Lloyd Wright and built sculptures in her front yard, soon realizing she would always need to create and make with her hands. Her journey as a craftsperson began at The Crucible in West Oakland, California, an arts and crafts school. She took her first jewelry class at age 12 and became a youth intern at age 15. Her time at The Crucible made her realize jewelry was exactly what she needed to be doing, her passion. She continued on to get her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Jewelry / Metal Arts at California College of the Arts with a minor in Writing & Literature.
