CLASS DESCRIPTION
Odd scraps of paper, vintage items, rusty materials, and bits and pieces found at the back of the junk drawer can give us the opportunity of approaching art with a more light-hearted attitude. We can become the alchemists: transforming bottle caps into planets and pie tins into shrines.

During this two-day workshop we will explore the art of assemblage by creating individual artworks that are rich in color and texture and complex in composition. We will age paper and objects creating an atmosphere of greater interest and cohesiveness.

While we work, we will informally visit the art of historic assemblage artists to better understand what this art form is about and view works of some current assemblage artists who are being recognized for their works.

By the second day, we will discuss composition, glues and attachments and some tools of the trade. Our pieces will take shape using objects and all that ‘stuff’ that magically transforms.

At the end of this class, in addition to completing an assemblage piece, students will have the foundation to feel comfortable creating assemblage pieces and have a pocketful of techniques that will help them meet challenges of creating in this enigmatic art form.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
MICHAEL WILSON and SUSAN SPENCER live and work here in Mendocino County. Past owners of The Beat Gallery in Ukiah, they are known for their unexpected use of materials in the non-traditional art form of assemblage.

Son of a well-known artist and animator, Michael studied at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena where he also owned and operated a small gallery in downtown Pasadena called The Upstairs Gallery, which featured works of contemporary art.

Migrating north to the Mendocino Coast Michael met independent local artist Susan and both became immersed in the study of assemblage art.

They currently focus on continuing creating art with found objects and building an inclusive community where all forms of art and creativity flourish.
