This workshop will cover centuries-old traditional techniques with some modern innovations, using authentic Japanese tools and materials. Students will learn to create multicolor prints from concept to completion, preservation and presentation, design and layout, registration, carving, test printing, block correction, paper preparation, inking and printing, dampness control, drying, and a lot more will be covered. The special character of Japanese woodblock prints comes from the application of water-based pigments to hand-carved blocks using craftsman made brushes, and printed with the specialized baren on lovely Japanese paper. Carving techniques can yield bold, textural effects or very precise and detailed results; thoughtful block design can utilize transparent layering to create interesting and subtle color harmonies, or clashes if so desired! The workshop will explore the many wonderful variables unique to the Japanese method.

I approach woodblock printmaking with the sensibility and experience of a landscape painter, well versed in the history of Western art and of the great periods in Japanese printmaking over the past four centuries. I have been learning this medium for forty years; the expressive capability and nuances of technique available to the artist are amazing! Any imagery can be applied to this medium; the subject matter that most appeals to me personally is the rich cultural heritage associated with Japan’s historic highways, the Tokaido, Nakasendo, and others… the roads are always calling!

My work has been exhibited all over the United States and internationally, including on nine occasions in Japan (Kyoto, Takanabe, Matsumoto, Omachi, Kakegawa), and twice in the Middle East (Cyprus and Jordan).

My work can be found in numerous private collections, and the permanent collections of museums, universities, colleges, and corporations, most notably the Kyoto International Woodprint Association, the Gordon Gilkey collection of the Portland Art Museum, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, and Oregon State University.

Most notable exhibition inclusions in the United States have been “Living Legacies: the JSMA @80” (the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, University of Oregon), “A Century of American Color Block Prints” (Annex Galleries, Santa Rosa, CA), and abroad in the “5th KIWA Exhibition” (Takanabe Museum of Art, Kyushu, Japan), during which my print was awarded the prestigious Takanabe City Mayor’s Award.
