This class will offer students an opportunity to explore the broader and the narrower possibilities of working in collage. Following a brief historical survey of collage masters and innovators the instructor will demonstrate strategies for developing unique collage materials. Doubtless there will be a number of “have you tried this?” techniques new to even the most seasoned collage artist. This program will encourage artists who are quilters, painters, printmakers, or graphic designers to bring their cache of materials and substrates to discover new applications as well as design, color and compositional investigations. The class will be fun and enrich the beginner as well as more advanced students.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
BOB RHOADES had a full-time teaching career in studio arts for 42 years. His longest position was with the College of the Redwoods Mendocino Coast where he was the department coordinator for 30 years. In that time he taught classes in Painting, Color & Design, Printmaking, Art Appreciation, Figure Drawing, and 3D Design, among others. Every class expanded his understanding of techniques and aesthetic investigation. His work in collage goes back to his earliest teaching in the 1970’s and continues today with work that was recently shown in Japan and currently on display at the Mendocino Art Center
