There are many dimensions to this workshop including and beyond handling clay. Specifically, we will make containers for human or animal ashes. Any closed vessel or sculpture can serve as a cremation urn, however, it’s truly the ULTIMATE expression of a person or pet. Consequently, beyond our immediate task, the urn provides opportunities to examine how we approach subject matter, content and consequence.
Included in this workshop will be:
1) Discussion of historical and contemporary funerary works and options through an image presentation. This will begin to guide us to the clarity and depth necessary.
2) Examination of the fundamentals necessary for engineering an urn guided by details of the intended recipient, such as volume and aesthetics. This will include a worksheet.
3) Technically, we’ll cover two part mold making, throwing closed forms and lids, various armature options, review the extruder and some consideration of surface treatments.
In a broader context we will examine the facets of visual communication and the task of clarifying visual content, intention and editing. We will conclude by appraising the effectiveness of our objective. This workshop will be intense but I promise it will also be a lot of fun!
