This workshop will explore the possibilities of layering enamels in a single piece without thick enamel build up using under-glazes, thin coats of enamel and finishing with over-glazes. After counter-enameling and base coating your metal, you can achieve amazing visual results by layering under-glazes with thin siftings of flux to obtain great depth with little accumulation of enamel. This use of under-glazes allows you to build up imagery without cost of weight or actual cost of enamel! We will then explore, in detail, the use of over-glazes - the final coat that adds clarity and highlights detail – the final ‘Ta Dah!’ Additionally, I will introduce you to Ginbari silver foil, a wonderful Japanese silver foil that is heavier than most of the enameling foils usually sold. Now that this wonderful stock is available again I am excited to be able to show you some of the myriad of ways you can use this foil for remarkable effects. We will also do explorations with mica powders (sold under many different trade names) and learn how they can be used to add radiance and glow to your piece.
The Susan E. Wood Jewelry Studio is available for use for a fee the days following your workshop should you like to continue practicing new skills or finish projects started in class. For more details or to schedule extra workdays, please contact Nancy Gardner, Jewelry/Metal Arts Coordinator.
