Alla prima means working with wet oil paint over the course of one day, or for as long as the paint remains wet and fresh. In this class you will be guided in discovering that painting alla prima in oil is one of the best ways to strengthen the relationship between color and form, practice color harmony, and create paintings full of spontaneity and energy.

We will be painting in the studio and making one painting per day. Subjects can include flowers, persimmons, rustic objects and anything that looks like fun to paint. Gabriel enjoys introducing paint as something to be mixed and blended on the palette, refined and transformed into what will become hundreds of unique individual brush strokes. Each painting can be small and simple. As the day ends and the painting takes form there is a great joy, especially in the final hour, as the strokes begin to dry and the impasto brush strokes left behind capture a kinetic energy of life, light and form.
This class is great for beginners, as well as expert painters. All levels are welcome.

I spent most of my life in Northern California and the Pacific Northwest. My childhood began in Fort Ross, California, and I still consider myself a native to Northern California.

I am the founder and director of NUMU Atelier in Los Gatos, California. I teach drawing and painting to all ages full time, year round. I studied among atelier teachers and peers since the mid 1990’s in Seattle, Washington, and pursued that path to Europe, Norway and New York City. Eventually I created my own atelier in 2012. Fortunately, my many friendships in the atelier community allow me to host a vibrant Visiting Artist Program of over a dozen successful painters who teach workshops with me every year. This allows me to bring this education to many more friends and artists, which also keeps me learning and practicing to become a better teacher and artist.
