This workshop begins with in-depth information on precious metal alloys – the recipes and math involved in calculating grades, colors and karats of precious metals, and the working properties associated with each different alloy. After choosing the alloy type that best suits your needs and using your scrap metal, we will pour ingots in shapes suitable for making desired stock forms – i.e. square, round, triangle wire, sheet, tubing, twisted wire, tapered and more. I will demonstrate the same processes with 14k yellow gold and 14k white gold. We will also cover gold and silver pricing, purchasing and refining. Students are encouraged to bring their own silver, sterling and gold scrap to re-process into useable stock.
The Susan E. Wood Jewelry Studio is available for use for a fee the days following your workshop should you like to continue practicing new skills or finish projects started in class. For more details or to schedule extra workdays, please contact Nancy Gardner, Jewelry/Metal Arts Coordinator.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
NANCY GARDNER has been fabricating fine jewelry in silver and gold for over 35 years. She received her BA in Metalsmithing from Buffalo State College during which she had a year long independent study at Studio Arts Center International (SACI) in Florence, Italy. In her last year of college she attended AR•CO an independent art school in Lisbon, Portugal, finalizing her degree and completing a Metal Smithing Certification. For the following two years she was a jewelry instructor at AR•CO. During her years in Europe, Nancy learned old world techniques from master crafts people and fell in love with the ancient art of metal smithing.
In 2001 Nancy opened Mendocino Jewelry Studio, on Main Street in Mendocino, where she exhibits her original hand fabricated jewelry along with 12 other prominent local jewelers.
