This class offers a wonderful approach to creating portraits made from beads, buttons, findings, and other mixed-media elements, and when placed together result in stunning effects. After the initial class project where students learn the steps to assemble, stitch, glue, and embellish, they will have the knowledge to create family portraits, landscapes, and pet portraits. These 3D pieces of art can be framed to become family heirlooms.
Students will learn:
Students will receive several copies of an image and learn how to replicate the facial features using a variety of beads, buttons, findings, and other mixed-media elements. There will be discussions and experimentation with the beads and findings prior to stitching and/or gluing in specific places on the project. After the instructor’s guidance and instruction, students will then be self-directed to continue their creation.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
ANNE MAYER HESSE has been working in mixed media doll making, weaving, basket making, beading, and fibers since the mid 1970s. Often she will combine the different disciplines to create outrageous new work. Annie has won numerous awards for her creations at art festivals throughout the country, has been written up many times in newspaper and magazine articles, had work shown on “Good Morning, America,” has been featured in six different books on doll-making and has twice been invited to participate in the White House Christmas Collection of Crafts. Anne was commissioned to create a 3 1/2 foot sculptural doll for the television series Central Park West, and was also commissioned to provide a small piece of artwork for the movie Grumpier Old Men. In 2007, Annie wrote a chapter on bead embroidery for the book, Beading for Cloth Dolls.
Anne teaches throughout the United States and has taught in Australia and Canada. 2019 will be Anne’s 12th year teaching at the Bead and Button Show in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the largest beading convention in the world. Her classes often resound with giggles and laughter and the creations produced in her classrooms are all unique and one-of-a-kind. A process instructor, as opposed to a project oriented teacher, Anne urges her students to listen to their own voices and to use her techniques in projects that will push students in their own special directions.
