CLASS DESCRIPTION
Based on the concepts of chi, yin and yang, Asian style brush painting developed over the last 1,500 years as one of the most intriguing, thoughtful and expressive ways of painting two-dimensional imagery. There are many more styles and appearances of brush painting than most people realize. Using Sumi-ink and opaque watercolors on rice paper we will explore the materials, the mentality and techniques of Oriental Brush Painting. The connection of the brush and ink to the paper is both satisfying and challenging. In this class you will create beautiful paintings and expand your drawing and painting skills, even if you have never painted or drawn before.

While there are many lessons in Asian Brush Painting, there are four classics of flower painting in the tradition of Chinese Brush that substantially aid in the progress of the developing student. Together they are known as the “Four Treasures.”

Representing the four seasons and classes of plants, in each of four lessons we will learn the various brush strokes that go into that particular subject. These brush strokes can be applied to many other subjects, plant, animal or landscape, giving a brush painter a sense of freedom to explore on their own.
In this three-day class, we will cover at least three of these 4four subjects.

Winter
Plum Blossom – flowering trees
The stark naked beauty of winter branches that are bursting with new life, symbolize hope and potential.

Spring
Orchid – Grasses and bulbs
New Growth, love, beauty, and graceful elegance are implied.

Summer
Bamboo principles are used in upright growing plants and trees.
Flourishing, abundance, growth, vigor and the symbol of the scholar.

Fall
Chrysanthemum – Ligneous broad-leafed plants with simple-petal flowers. Community, enduring friendships and graciousness in age are suggested.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
I am joyfully committed to visual poetry, light, transformation and healing, through paintings that bring energy and serenity into the world. I have been teaching art for the last 25 years, including brush painting since 1999, sharing a lifetime of exploration in drawing and painting arts, with adults and children of all ages. Observant and intuitive, I meet you where you are at and encourage you to evolve beyond a momentary limitation. I recognize that you will bring your own sensibility to the techniques I present while drawing out your inner artist.
