In ceramics, there are many ways to treat the surface of the objects we fire. When it comes to incorporating complex imagery and layered meaning, however, techniques that are implemented during the green state of clay are some of the most successful and versatile tools in a ceramicists belt. In this three-day workshop, we will focus on the techniques of inlay, sgrafitto, slip trailing, resists, and newspaper transfers. Students are encouraged to bring green work, but we will also build our own set of wall box tiles to use as canvases to create beautiful clay paintings. We will begin our exploration on surface by doing a quick history lesson, looking at both historical and contemporary examples of these techniques being executed to great effects. Afterwards, we will build our clay box tiles, and proceed to experiment with each technique, as well as combining them to create our desired level of visual noise. Last, we will fire the work once to a bisque temperature and do a brief demo on selective glazing. Students are encouraged to bring reference images, patterns, inspirational textures, stencils, etc., as we will use them to create the newspaper transfers and paper resists.

KARINA MAGO is a Venezuelan artist currently interested in making ceramic and paper installations that activate spaces through their shadows. Raised in Caracas, then promptly transplanted to South Florida, she was forced to trade rolling mountain ranges and towering steel for sandy beaches and pastel shopping plazas. This shift in surroundings inspired an ongoing fascination with place and memory, the makings of identity. She received her BFA from Florida State University in the spring of 2017 with concentrations in ceramics, printmaking, and painting and since has completed an Artist Residency for Goggleworks Center for the Arts in Reading, PA. Currently, Karina Mago is an Artist in Residence at the Mendocino Art Center.
