This two-day workshop will enrich your dry pastel experience from the basics to the unusual. Our indoor and outdoor paintings will be augmented with classroom demos, pastel basics, such as working with the pigments and supports we need, to the techniques of mark making. Pastels are brilliant, easy to use colors that both the beginner and professional can enjoy. All levels of experience are welcome to paint with us in both still life and plein air in the beautiful surroundings of Mendocino.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
CHANNING RUDD received his BFA at Syracuse University in New York where he grew up. He studied under the renowned Bauhaus professor Peter Piening, friend of painters Maholy-Nagy and Paul Klee. After his MFA studies at the California College of the Arts he worked in San Francisco as an Art Director for Seagrams Wine Division – Browne Vintners.
While a free-lance artist he started making wine, won awards and then ran his own North Bay winery and vineyard for the next 21 years. He has been teaching a variety of college art classes, photography, history, viticultural science and wine making and beer making classes for the last 25 years.
Every Wednesday he paints with his plein air group of friends. In his paintings Channing has always felt the expressiveness and emotional need for form but especially color in his art.
“An artist must remain in touch with his inner child – that wonderful quality of enthusiasm with day to day life and be able express it in his work.”
He describes his paintings as “California Impressionist,” but a little “Fauvist and Realist”… but always… “ Subject-to-Change-ish.”
