This intensive three-day jewelry casting workshop will focus on techniques that produce porosity free gold and silver jewelry castings with extreme detail. Casting demonstrations will be in sterling silver and casting bronze, however, the technique will be very specific for use with 14K and 18K gold. All techniques will be adapted for use in an artist studio environment. Students will learn basic techniques for wax model carving, proper sprue placement, various burnout techniques, ingot pouring, simple RTV mold making plus many tricks of the trade from a well seasoned professional. Ira will also reveal and demonstrate a proprietary mesh casting technique he developed in the 90s. One of these special mesh cast pieces is included in the Permanent Collection of the Smithsonian Renwick Gallery.
The Susan E. Wood Jewelry Studio is available for use for a fee the days following your workshop should you like to continue practicing new skills or finish projects started in class. For more details or to schedule extra workdays, please contact Nancy Gardner, Jewelry/Metal Arts Coordinator.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR IRA SHERMAN has worked as a master jeweler and metal smith for over 40 years. His company, Ira Sherman Designs, LLC, was founded in 1975 with his product line focusing on custom wedding ring design. Sherman developed many proprietary techniques that allowed him to produce extremely high quality yellow and white gold castings using simple relatively inexpensive home studio casting equipment. Some of Sherman's techniques include special sprue configurations and gold alloys specific for one-of-a-kind castings.
