This mixed media workshop focuses on the inherent beauty of black as a color. While the focus is on abstraction, it will incorporate both drawing and painting processes; it honors the rich and varied tonal and textural effects one can achieve with a restrained palette of blacks, greys and white. We will work a variety of media, which will include black and white gesso, ink, graphite, water-based graphite, graphite powder, soft pastels and oil pigment sticks. This exciting, innovative workshop is for continuing artists of all mediums.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Painting is Prayer for colorist and visionary artist MIRA M. WHITE. When viewing her multi-media art works one bears witness to a personal mythology of deeply felt images that stem from a lifelong preoccupation with and devotion to life as an ongoing journey of change and transformation. Her work with multiple media includes oils, acrylics, watercolor, soft pastels, encaustics and all drawing media. Pieces are layered and developed over an extended period and inhabit watery, ambiguous and atmospheric spaces. Sequence, chronology and time play a significant role in these works, regardless of medium. There is often an intentional blurring of boundaries between the physical and the psychical – this is what sustains her interest and what continuously opens up future possibilities.
Her professional responsibilities include a full teaching schedule of classes and workshops in multiple media. Widely respected in Northern California Bay Area art communities, in recent years she has broadened her teaching venues to include workshops across the country.
Mira’s work frequently appears in both online and hard copy art books and magazines. The Pastel Journal did a second article on her in their December 2018 issue. Art Journey: Abstract Painting, as well as another anthology, Journeys into Abstraction, include her work. Mira holds a BFA with High Distinction and an MFA with Distinction from CCAC. She is a member of CWA, IEA, NAWA, Arts Benicia and OPUS.
