A mix of beauty at the confluence of mathematics, chemistry, and poetry; this workshop will focus on learning color in clay. We will discuss how to mix pigment into a clay body by percentage to have repeatable and controllable results. We will share techniques to formulate your mixtures, recognize true pigment saturation, and work with gradients. Additionally, we will find our own colors by mixing a triaxial blend of various colors. We will talk about how to use this controlled color mixing method to our advantage and how we can use it in our own art practices.

Amanda has spent time working at Anderson Ranch Art Center in Snowmass Village, Colorado (2007); University of Arkansas (2007-2011); Oregon College of Art and Craft in Portland, Oregon (2011); The Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramics Arts in Helena, Montana (2012); Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts in New Castle, Maine (2014); the University of Washington (2015, 2018); Oregon State University in the Microbiology Department (2016-17); Tainan National University of the Arts in Taiwan (2017); Ash Street Project in Portland, Oregon (2018); The Reykjavik School of Visual Arts (2019); and Pottery Northwest (2017-2019). She is currently a studio artist in Seattle, Washington.

Our settings can have a profound effect on how individuals process and cope with the details of such interconnected lives. At times, it helps to know that some things will be constant while other things change. Amanda finds comfort in this dichotomy – things both constant and reliable while at once ever-changing – mirrored in the bodies of sea and sky present. She seeks to bring such things to attention in her porcelain sculptures and installations using these natural phenomena as metaphors and anchors for the transitions we all face. She asks for her work to listen rather than to profess loudly, she wants it to be present and stable, but dynamic like the sea and the sky.
