17th Annual home & garden tour

Ellen's Jewelry & Textile Studio & Garden

Ellen and Karl bought their two-acre property in 1988, with a small fixer upper house, and no garden on it. It has been a continual project ever since. Over the years they improved the house, and built studios for Ellen and Karl, as well as various out buildings. A remodel/addition finished in 2008, using a contractor for the first time, completed the building projects. All of this left no time or money to plan and implement an overall landscape design.

The plantings, around the house and edging around a small clearing and shade garden, evolved bed by bed over the years. All of this time Ellen has been and continues to care for other peoples gardens. A walk around her garden reveals that 90% of the plants are started from divisions, cuttings and seeds. Some are plants no longer wanted by customers that Ellen found a place for at home.

There is a separate vegetable garden with a greenhouse and netted "berry house." Raised box beds are necessary, for vegetables as the property is scattered with Redwoods with hungry roots. This garden shows what a little money and a lot of patience can grow.
