Susan's Ceramic Studios & Garden
It has taken 40 years for the homestead to grow into the oasis it is today. Physical stamina and a spirit of adventure combined to create a farmhouse, an English style flower and vegetable garden, a hand-building studio, a glaze studio and a showroom. Susan and her husband Sasha worked together in their studio for 35 years, until his untimely death in 2003.
By 2005 Susan had gained enough stamina and inspiration to continue in her own personal ceramic work. She resumed the hand-building in clay that she had left 30 years previously to focus on the glazing of their productive ware. Susan studied with Antonio Prieto at Mills College. Her high-fired stoneware forms incorporate elegance and spontaneity. She works with thin flat expanses of textured clay to create vessels and wall-pieces. Susan's glazes are a wide subtle earth-tone spectrum: maroon, orange to greens and violets. Ceramics is her life-long journey.
Sasha helped to create the Ceramic studios at the Mendocino Art Center, and the ceramic studio is called the Makovkin. Sasha was also invited to be in a show of ceramics at the de Young Museum in San Francisco in the 70's.áSusan's studios will be marked 1, 2, and 3 for your enjoyment, to see the process she goes through, before it reaches the show room.
