18th Annual home & garden tour

William & Jennie Zacha Home,
Mendocino Art Center Founders

In 1964 Mendocino had no doctor and the Zacha's had just purchased this property on Main Street for their dream home. The property, being on Main Street, offered little privacy, so when Bill and Donald Hahn, MD met, a creative solution was found.

Build a custom ground floor office for Dr. Hahn and his practice and create the Zacha family home on the second floor... thus giving the Zacha family a bit of privacy.

Bill was, along with being an artist and teacher, an architect. He was a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright and modernist architecture. He designed their new home around a central atrium, bringing the sun in to the center of the 2,000 square foot house.

The entire south facade is a wall of windows, offering a spectacular view of Mendocino Bay and the Headlands.

By his creative use of space and light he managed to create an oasis of warmth and quiet in this hectic town.

Bill and Jennie lived here to the end of their lives, and their daughter Lucia still lives here.
