26th Annual Mendocino Coast Garden Tour

About 15 years ago when I first started placing rocks on the property, I was intimidated by them. Where should they go? How do I get them there? What will it mean? What if I get it wrong? Things have evolved since then.

Initially they were meant to act as a context for the buildings. Pretty rocks placed with some purpose on the ground next to already existing structures. Now they are more like landforms… autonomous. Their own spacial things. You can have an idea what you want to do when you get a rock from the quarry, but on a good day you let the rock tell you where it should go. And then you listen.

The rocks are from the Laytonville quarry. The crew was basically Sean Pyorre and his excavator, and me and my shovel.

By the Numbers:
2000 yards of dirt...
2500 tons of rock...
Untold tons of listening...
