WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Experience the magic of firing in the salt and soda kilns. Begin the week by glazing your cone 10 bisque ware, learning ways to apply glazes and engobes in order to make the most of this wonderful firing method. The glory of salt/soda firing lies in the complex surfaces it can create. Every detail of texture is emphasized, unlike ordinary glazes which often cover up and obscure fine patterns in the clay. The glazes we apply will take on surprising, subtle new colors of remarkable variability due to their interaction with sodium vapors in the kilns. While our pieces are in the kilns, we will work at the wheel and/or hand build. This will be a time for getting questions answered as well as receiving individual help with challenges you are facing in your own work. Studio time will include explanation of how salt & soda kilns work and how to get different kinds of effects from them, as well as demos of decorative, handbuilding, and wheel throwing techniques. All levels welcome. Bisqueware will be available for beginners to glaze.

ALTERNATIVE RAKU FIRING TECHNIQUES I
Eduardo Lazo

This five-day workshop begins Sunday, July 19, and meets 9:30 am - 4:30 pm each day. Tuition: $405. Current members may take a $25 discount on one workshop per year.

Early Bird Discount: Register for your workshop at least one month in advance of the workshop start date and enjoy $10 off the price of tuition.

There is a non-refundable registration fee of $15 for non-members. Please be sure to add this one time per calendar year fee to your shopping cart. Or better yet, become a MAC member!

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Four basic "state of the art" Alternative Raku firing methods will be explored:

1. One Step Naked Raku consists of applying specially prepared clay slip to finely sanded, burnished, or terra sigillata covered pieces that have been low bisqued. Post firing reduction smoke enters the cracks of the slip imparting a unique crackle pattern onto the ware.

2. In Two Step Naked Raku a thin layer of clay slip is applied, then covered with a thin layer of low fire crackle glaze. One can mask or sgraffito through this shell to create various patterns that will compliment the crackle patterns that develop during post firing reduction. The shell falls off leaving the carbon stencil decoration.

3. Ferric Chloride Techniques

a. Ferric Chloride is sprayed onto glazed ware emerging from the raku kiln. Different cooling temperatures result in colors ranging from rust red and amber to various shades of yellow. Reduction effects are produced by encircling the work in newspaper and a wet towel.

b. Ferric chloride, sodium chloride, sugar and other combustibles are applied to bisque ware that is then placed in an aluminum foil saggar and fired. Limited post firing reduction is used for special effects.

4. Horse Hair high contrast reduction decorative techniques will be used on white stoneware. Coloring effects with ferric chloride and acrylics.

Slam Molds will be made and used as an easy way to quickly make wall pieces. Udo drum fabrication by hand building and on the wheel will be covered.

Participants should have intermediate to advanced ceramic skills. Participants must bring at least 12 bisqued pieces prepared according to specific instructions. A detailed list of requirements, supplies and materials will be available. Please see the accompanying materials list.
