The foremost goal is for the student to become familiar and comfortable with warping the loom, and the medium of weaving. I encourage my students to explore and to inject their creativity while learning rules and process. Using my speed warping technique, each student will warp and weave two projects over the three days. You will learn how to calculate a warp, read drafts, and begin to understand how weave structure, color, texture, and design intermingle. Intermediate students are welcome to come for a warping refresher and their next weaving step.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION This four-day workshop is open to all levels of weavers interested in learning backstrap weaving as practiced by Maya women in Guatemala. On the first day, one warps the simple loom and begins to learn elements of traditional designs. A weaver is an integral part of the loom; with warp ends tied to post and the strap around the waist, controlling the tension of the warp with movements of the body. After a few days, brocade patterns emerge beneath your fingers along the warp.
ALBERTINA LOPEZ MARTIN is from the highlands of Guatemala. She learned to weave watching her mother and grandmother, and tied on her first loom when she was seven; now her daughters weave. She has given demonstrations across the US, including the Academy of Science in San Francisco and the Textile Design Department at UC Davis.
