CLASS DESCRIPTION
Enamel as a painterly medium is a challenge to manipulate on three-dimensional forms. In this three-day workshop we will enamel a small copper vessel, both inside and outside, creating three-dimensional non-monochromatic enamel colors through layering and with the aid of several firing tricks. We will start by drawing lines and negative space from our subconscious using the sgrafitto (scratch-through) technique on an airbrushed white enamel surface which is applied as a liquid and then fired.

The lines will serve as a sort of “reverse cloisonné” guiding our color applications. Color will be created in layers by sifting and by a technique called “wet floating” of fine enamel particles. Adding precious metal foils will be an option. We will attempt to stay loose and “painterly” through our many firings. In learning how to manipulate the enamel and dealing with the vagaries of a dimensional substrate you will also learn a lot about the science of enameling. Surface manipulations will allow us to examine even more subtle variations of color.
