CLASS DESCRIPTION
The ancient process of lost wax casting has been around for over 5,700 years and is still used today to make jewelry, tableware and other adornments. Essentially any shape can be transformed from wax into metal. In this class we will explore the basics of the lost wax process from start to finish. Students will learn how to work with various wax tools to create wearable, sculptural, or functional objects. Basic wax forming techniques include the use of carving tools, an alcohol lamp, electric wax pens and high speed rotary Dremels.

After creating a wax model, students will be shown how to invest with high temperature silica plaster and run a programmable burnout kiln. Finally we will work with a casting torch and Spincaster™ to centrifugally cast into bronze or silver. Students can expect to come out of the class with one to two finished pieces.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
TREVI ALOHILANI PENDRO was born in Los Angeles and grew up on the small island of Alameda, California. She is currently an Artist in Residence at the Mendocino Art Center. Trevi always knew she would be an artist, beginning with incessant drawings as an infant. In elementary school, she was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright – building sculptures with found bricks in the front yard – and knew she always had to make with her hands. Her journey as a craftsperson began at The Crucible in West Oakland, California, a non-profit fire arts school. She took her first jewelry class at age 12 and became a youth intern at age 15. Her time at The Crucible made her realize jewelry was exactly what she needed to be doing, her passion. She continued on to get her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Jewelry/Metal Arts at California College of the Arts with a minor in Writing and Literature.
