Solarplate offers an exciting alternative to traditional intaglio and relief printmaking. Simpler and safer, this technique requires only the sun or other UV light to expose the image, and tap water to "etch" the plate. This workshop will uncover the mystery and magic of the medium. We will explore the many approaches of image development—direct drawing on transparent surfaces, photographic and digital options, and painting directly on the plate. Both positives and negatives can be utilized, each offering a different outcome. You will be guided through the process of inking, wiping, and printing the finished plate—the "wow" effect—along with tips for enhancing your print after it is pulled. A basic knowledge of printmaking is recommended, but not required. All you need is a willingness to be inspired.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
KATHY CARL has made a life of exploration and experimentation through many artistic avenues. From her start at San Jose State University, she transferred to Sonoma State University to focus on printmaking, where she earned her B.A. degree in 1976. For the next 20 years, she built a successful graphic design business in Palo Alto (Avenue Design). She continued to pursue her fine art passions through community colleges, the Palo Alto Cultural Center, and the Pacific Art League of Palo Alto, where she also served as Fund Development and Education Director. It was there she was able to work independently in their printmaking facility, earning a one-artist show in 1983. She was an important team member for the prestigious biennial, "Pacific Prints," as well as being juried into the exhibit.
In late 1997, Kathy migrated to Mendocino, bringing her business with her (thanks to Internet). She has flourished in this community—as a member of the Mendocino Figure Drawing Collective, the Mendocino Portrait Group, the Mendocino Art Center, and Mendocino College. Kathy currently runs studio groups at Noyo Printworks in Fort Bragg. She revisited the technique of Solarplate etching and relief and spent the last two years studying the process. She has attended workshops with Dan Welden, the originator of Solarplate and a master printmaker. Kathy is now ready to share her discoveries.
