For this workshop, students should have basic experience on how transparent dye behaves and mixes on the silk. Demonstrations will focus on using dye, sodium alginate, cellulose, water and salt to create imagery and border design. Cellulose will be used both to treat the silk and as a dye thickener. They will be instructed on how to work with dye and thickening agents such as sodium alginate and water-soluble resists. Specifically, students will learn techniques that allow them to layer and dye-paint a motif on top of a wet, dry or treated ground. Students will be exploring border design, layering and texture, and combining different resist techniques as they paint one to two art pieces each day.

Students can use dye set concentrate or steam to set the dye. This class is for students who already paint on silk.

DEBRA DOLSBERRY pursues silk painting as her late-in-life career. Her silk motifs are largely drawn from nature and she often uses tropical themes such as hibiscus, plumeria, banana leaf and monstera in her work, but her absolute favorite motif is the ginkgo leaf which she does not confine to shades of green. She develops her own bias cut garment patterns as well as using Carter Smith’s wonderful bias cut jacket and dress patterns. She designs the motif; hand paints and sews each garment herself. She teaches classes in her studio as well as in art centers in the Western United States and sells her hand painted silks independently and through boutiques in Hawaii.
