This workshop will explore various methods for adding richness and depth to ceramic surfaces using colored slips. Our focus will be on working with clay while it is in the leather-hard stage, when it is strong but still forgiving and responsive to touch, a perfect time for experimentation. It is an opportunity to treat clay as a canvas, and to think about surface decoration before it comes time to glaze. Students will learn techniques to paint, carve, scrape, sponge, and stencil slips to produce a range of effects from painterly to graphic. We will also discuss simple methods for formulating and mixing colored slip to fit a specific clay body. These slips can be fired anywhere from low to high fire temperatures.
Students will be provided with leather-hard tiles to begin experimenting with the decorative possibilities of slips right away, and have the option to explore surface decoration further on volumetric forms. Throughout the course we will be discussing how surface design relates to form, and ways they can complement and enhance one another. Techniques covered in this workshop can be applied to any type of functional or sculptural work.
