Whether above or below water, I like all things furry, feathery and scaly! This workshop will cover the basics of sculpting wild animal heads. With the use of reference images, we will focus on one animal head (of your choosing) throughout the workshop. Explorations into expressions, specific animal behaviors, and creative textures will be highly encouraged and discussed. We will begin with a basic armature and build solid off of the armature. At the end of the workshop, I will demonstrate how to hollow out your sculpture at home and add supports for hanging the head on a wall.
Please think about what kind of animal bust you would like to sculpt and bring several printed images of that animal. I encourage choosing a wild animal (not your pet). Try to bring in as many pictures of the animal from different angles. Feel free to think outside of the box…
This workshop will be a fun exploration into the minds of animals, so no experience is necessary… just bring yourself and a willingness to explore!
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
HEATHER HILLARD has been playing with clay since she was a young girl, however, she was not always an artist and she only started seriously following her desire to become a sculptor two years ago. As a nature lover passionate about marine conservation, she pursued a career as a marine biologist for almost 10 years. Her love of wildlife and fascination with studying animals in their environments has become the greatest source of inspiration for her art. Now, Heather strives to build sculptures that explore the sometimes intricate and delicate relationships between humans and nature. She recently completed a post-baccalaureate year at Sacramento State University and is a current ceramic resident at Mendocino Art Center. Although she has taught many biology classes, she can’t wait to teach her first ever clay workshop!
