This workshop provides you with the opportunity to develop an interdisciplinary practice in relation and response to historical traditions and contemporary notions of painting. Mainstream history defines painting as a two dimensional plane concerned with surface and image. This convention will be used as a jumping off point as we address painting’s surface, structure, material specificity, context and placement. The focus of this class is to consider what a painting is and what it can be and to imagine its future as recent developments point to ever-expanding spatial and material freedoms.

Open assignments encourage students to explore their own material and conceptual interests. Work produced for this class can incorporate the use of traditional materials such as wood, canvas and paint and can extend to video, sculpture, installation, photography and performance. Lectures illustrated by slide presentations will look back to the “painters” of the late 1960s to the early 1970s who set the precedent for painting and mixed media approaches, including Lynda Benglis’ pour paintings, Howardena Pindell’s sculptural grids and Shigeko Kubota’s performance paintings. We will also examine contemporary artists Angela De La Cruz, Katharina Grosse, Jessica Stockholder, Dianna Molzan, Paul Kos and Linda Besemer among others. Readings will provide context for the critical discourse surrounding painting’s formal and conceptual evolution.

DANIELLE LAWRENCE (b. 1978, Ohio) is a San Francisco-based interdisciplinary artist whose practice is anchored to expanding painting’s formal elements and contextual languages. Working primarily in painting and sculpture, she makes use of unconventional materials and creates strikingly unique pairings between painted imagery and three-dimensional form.

She received a BFA in painting and drawing from the San Francisco Art Institute (2003) and a MFA from Mills College (2011) in painting and sculpture. Her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions in the Bay Area and most recently in Los Angeles, CA, and Brooklyn, NY. Selected exhibitions include Landfill/Bedrock at Guerrero Gallery in San Francisco, CA (2016); New Abstraction at Traywick Contemporary in Berkeley, CA, (2015); Miami Project at Traywick Contemporary in Miami, FL (2015); Color As Space, As Sense (with Linda Geary) at [ 2nd floor projects ] San Francisco (2012). Public collections include the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, San Francisco, CA; C.H.O.M.P., Monterey Bay, CA; and the Triton Museum of Art, Santa Clara, CA.
