Wall-mounted ceramic work provides an ideal surface for detailed and compelling imagery. Through experimentation, students will learn how clay can be treated as a two-dimensional canvas. We will begin by constructing practical, dynamic forms ideal for wall hanging. Historical and contemporary examples of wall-mounted work will be presented to help students develop ideas.
Once our forms are complete, we will begin to build upon the surface, to create an active, dynamic, and rich tapestry of information. Slips, underglazes, terra sigillata, stains, glazes and various carving techniques will give students ample opportunity to explore and achieve their individual goals. By the end of this course, students will have gained a comprehensive understanding of wall-mounted ceramic work and a finished, glazed piece.
