In this workshop Fiber Art enthusiasts will drop their feed dogs and use free-motion machine stitching with thread to create visual and textural effects on fabric.

They will explore several stitching techniques that can be used as surface embellishment on fabric. They will begin with free-motion basics then move on to Thread Sketching and Thread Painting exercises using simple shapes and designs. Next, they will learn about Textural Stitching (to use as surface enhancement), “Dimensional Stitching” (to define or emphasize shapes and create light and shadow) and play with “Structural Stitching” using a dissolvable substrate, in order to create unique, open, threadwork, which can be “fabric-like” or architectural. Finally, each will create a small Fiber Art project of their choice using one or more of these stitching techniques.

Students must know how to sew before taking this class.

LINDA V. HUBBARD’s “mission” is to explore the myriad of techniques that can be used as tools to create with cloth and thread. Her interest in art (music study in Europe and a BA degree in Art - concentration Ceramics) was always important but blossomed when she discovered quilting in the 1990’s. She taught herself the basics of traditional quilting and quickly found it restrictive. She has steadily experimented with many techniques such as Fabric Manipulation, Insertion, Dimension, Raw Edge Appliqué, Rust Dyeing, Screen Printing, Stamping and has most recently been working with the Discharge Dyeing process to create interesting and unpredictable fabric designs that, when heavily free-motion stitched, using Thread Sketching, Thread Painting and other stitching techniques bring depth, dimension and texture to her artworks.

Linda is a resident of Benicia, California, and has been a member of Arts Benicia for many years. She has been juried into many of their exhibits and was selected as one of the artists to exhibit in their nation-wide open-call textile show this summer, “Thread Count”. Last summer she was featured guest artist at the Blackhawk Gallery in Danville, California. In March, she was selected to participate in the annual “Material Matters” exhibit at the Seager Gray Gallery in Mill Valley.

Fiber Art in Linda’s view is constantly evolving as more techniques are developed and more rules are broken which will result in more exciting artworks to come.
