In this playful class you will be introduced to the fun and creative world of Indigo Dyeing using the ancient Japanese resist-dyeing technique known as Shibori. You will learn how to create and maintain an indigo dye vat using pre-reduce indigo crystals. A variety of shibori techniques will be demonstrated: folding, clamping, tying and binding that you can apply to produce unique patterns and designs on a set of napkins. You will also be given your choice of a travel tote bag or scarf to use for your final project. In addition we will explore shibori in fashion applications to re-purpose and up-cycle old clothes into beautiful garments again. So get ready for a fun-filled weekend of creative possibilities.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
BETH ANNE MAHAR spent over 30 years as a technical designer working for such brands as The Gap, Levis’ and Athleta. In 2015 she stepped away from the demands of the corporate world to pursue her love of Shibori and natural indigo dyeing full time. She maintains a working studio in Marin where she also gives private lessons. Beth has taught workshops in France and the USA, and you can find her work on Etsy. Beth’s playful approach to this ancient art makes her workshops a favorite.
"I enjoy finding new and innovative possibilities that take me deeper into this ancient skill combining low-tech traditional handwork with high tech out of the box techniques. The alchemy is irresistible! I'm excited and grateful to have discovered this beautiful art form and share with others my love for color, design and the affinity for the unexpected."
