This three-day workshop will be a fun and intensive introduction to nuno felting and botanical printing. On the first day, we will use a wet felting method to fuse silk to extra fine Merino wool. The focus will be on making lovely scarves that are fine, lightweight and drapable, but that are also strong. Over the next two days, we will learn how to embellish the felted scarves with botanical prints. Lovely prints can be produced on silk and wool using plant materials found growing in our forests and back yards. While this subject can be happily explored at length, this class is an introduction to botanical printing on protein fibers such as silk and wool.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
"I love fiber arts – the history, beauty, tactile quality, variety, and the common thread that links my hands to those of so many in the past! I was trained as a chemist, but I am also enthralled with fiber and plants. These combined interests have resulted in my second career in fiber arts: silk painting, botanical printing and feltmaking. My work with botanical printing allows me to walk outside to collect leaves, bark, roots, and flowers, process them on my textiles, and obtain lovely prints. I literally bring the outdoors inside. It is so satisfying to use the natural materials around us (and a little chemistry) to create beautiful cloth! As a feltmaker, I am thrilled with the tactile quality of the wool and other fibers, and love that felt making is an ancient and very usable medium. My work – paintings, botanical prints and felted pieces – are inspired by the beauty just outside my door in the Sierra Nevada foothills."
