Explore the unique mark making qualities of monotype, the painterly print, and expand your art practice. We will work with water based Akua Inks and cover a range of techniques that include the Subtractive and Additive methods. Also, we will work with the Transfer technique used by Matisse and multiple plates as well as the “ghost print.” In addition, we will add collage and chine collé to extend the image into mixed media. The emphasis will be an intuitive approach with experimentation encouraged. No experience is necessary and beginners and all levels are welcome!

LARRY STEFL is a practicing artist/art educator/jazz musician with his Masters in Fine Art from the University of California at Berkeley. His art in sculpture, printmaking, collage and drawing has been shown in over 140 exhibitions in the last 30 plus years in California, Nevada, New Mexico, New Jersey and Japan. Larry has studied Innovative Printmaking at the Printmaking Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Kala Institute in Berkeley, and Electric Works in San Francisco.

His recent work in mixed media collage and monotype is from the “Brazil Series.” They are influenced by study trips to Brazil, where he has integrated the playful rhythms and colors of the Afro-Brazilian culture. A rich layering process and gestural mark making are a primary focus in creating these colorful, vibrant and rhythmical improvisations. He often uses monotype processes with a press to begin and moves towards mixed media with the addition of collage elements. The work has evolved into the “Boa Vista Series” which means good view in Portuguese and is a metaphor for a favorite area in Salvador, Brazil. He is also influenced by an interest in Zen and travels to Japan, Nepal and Bali. As a jazz guitarist, his art is influenced by a lyrical quality and improvisation in his working process.

Larry is the recipient of numerous grants, awards and honors. He received the Fund for Artists Arts Teacher Fellowship (FFAATF) Program award for $5,000 at the East Bay Community Foundation in 2007. Grants awarded include the LEF Foundation, San Francisco Foundation, Michael Jordan Foundation and the Berkeley Public Education Foundation. In 2003, he served as Chair of the Pacific Rim Sculptors Group organizing “Tribute Programs” for sculptors Peter Voulkos and Sidney Gordin at the Richmond Art Center. He was invited to participate in a “Cultural Exchange Program” in Paris, France, with artist Raymond Saunders in conjunction with the California College of Art Summer Intensive in 2000. The California Art Education Association Northern Area awarded him the “Golden Apple Award” in 1998 for Outstanding Service in Art Education.

Larry has served as an Art Educator at Berkeley City College, Laney College and the National Institute of Art and Disabilities. He is currently an Art Instructor with Martin Luther King Middle School in Berkeley, CA, and has served on the Board of Directors of the Berkeley Art Center. He maintains his studio in Oakland and provides workshop sessions for artists to explore innovative printmaking in “Monotype Sessions.” Larry is also a jazz guitarist/composer who has produced his own CD “Bahia Chant” of original compositions inspired from Brazil.
