Upcoming Fine Art Classes
Fine Art Department
Instructor: David Weitzman
We’ll begin by enlarging our sense of the book, looking at many of the possible forms beyond the bound, codex book – flip books, fan fold, concertina, collage and montage books, artists’ books, cloth books, origami books, comic books, scrolls, overlays, and pop-up books.
We’ll page through illustrated books from America, Europe, and Asia. And we’ll ask ourselves, “What am I experiencing when I turn these pages?” Recognizing that the page is an alternative space apart from any other reality, we’ll realize, too, that anything can happen on a page. That just turning to the next page can lead to surprises, discovery, shock, and adventure.
All the time we’ll be thinking about the book we’d like to make. We’ll begin making thumbnail sketches, and storyboards, creating a narrative in a sequence of words and images, talking about pages and spreads, conscious now of visual flow, pacing, cadence, rhythm, creating space-time sequences. We’ll look at comic book techniques for speeding up and slowing down time. There will be lots of tools and materials at hand to make dummy books.
Throughout we will be considering the practical aspects of book design – illustration techniques, formats and trim sizes, media and materials, typography (language in visual form), fitting the words around, over, and into the art, using digital photography, photocopiers and the creative process.
The goal of the class is to have everyone go home with a storyboard and perhaps even a dummy for a unique, wonderful book of their own making.
