March 27–29, 2020 (Friday–Sunday, 9:30am–4:30pm)

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, all Mendocino Art Center classes, open studios, and exhibits will be postponed, and the gallery store will be closed, through May 31. More information

Students will learn how to create classically beautiful filigree jewelry. Starting with making sterling wire frame shapes which then are filled with fine silver filigree wires, we will construct three pieces of jewelry. Each project, earrings, pendant and bracelet links, will demonstrate different aspects of the filigree process. Mastering this process will allow students to employ old world techniques into their own modern designs.

The Susan E. Wood Jewelry Studio is available for use for a fee the days following your workshop should you like to continue practicing new skills or finish projects started in class. For more details or to schedule extra workdays, please contact Nancy Gardner, Jewelry/Metal Arts Coordinator.

PABLO CUBANGBANG was born in 1971 in a small town in the Philippines. Pablo is attending the Cabrillo College in Aptos, CA, majoring in fine arts. Since spring 2014 he has been a member of the Cabrillo Seahawk Metal Arts Club, (SMAC), and is the past president of the SMAC. Pablo is honored to be instructed and mentored by Dawn Nakanishi in the metal arts. Through a workshop by Yehuda Tassa, sponsored by SMAC, he learned the basic filigree process which he fell in love with. He loves the intricate details of the process which reminds him of the beauty of calligraphic penmanship he adored at a young age.

Pablo has extensively created new pieces and continued to hone his filigree art at his small studio he built in his garage. He has started to incorporate his filigree with other techniques in casting and enameling. He has also acquired many skills from SMAC sponsored workshops, including granulation, stone setting and bright setting, to name a few. During summer 2016, Pablo was honored to teach jewelry workshops through the Cabrillo Extension Program, fulfilling part of his dream in becoming an artist. In spring 2014, Pablo received the Visual Arts Scholarship for his jewelry and watercolor pieces. In spring 2015, he received The Visual Arts Scholarship for his jewelry. Pablo has been a member of the Monterey Bay Metal Arts Guild since May 2015.
