This workshop will focus on the basics of metal smithing – piercing, sawing, filing, fitting and, most importantly and most challenging, soldering. We will create one-of-a-kind fabricated pieces using and mastering basic metal smithing techniques. Sterling silver stock will be available for purchase in class to create a pendant or ring with a cabochon bezel set stone. Students are encouraged to bring their own fabrication projects or designs to construct in class. I thoroughly enjoy the challenge of figuring out the best way to construct your creative design and realize it in metal. Upon completion of this class students will have the required experience to participate in open studio, rent studio facilities or create your own workspace with confidence. For those students with prior experience this class is a great opportunity to hone your soldering skills, expand your equipment knowledge and learn a few new fabrication tricks from a 35-year veteran.
The Susan E. Wood Jewelry Studio is available for use for a fee the days following your workshop should you like to continue practicing new skills or finish projects started in class. For more details or to schedule extra workdays, please contact Nancy Gardner, Jewelry/Metal Arts Coordinator.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
NANCY GARDNER has been fabricating fine jewelry in silver and gold for over 35 years. She received her BA in metal smithing from Buffalo State College during which she independently studied at SACI – Studio Arts Center International in Florence, Italy. In her last year of college she attended AR•CO, an independent art school in Lisbon, Portugal, finalizing her degree and completing a master metal smithing certification. For the following two years she was a metal arts instructor at AR•CO in Lisbon. During her years in Europe, Nancy learned old world techniques from master crafts people and fell in love with the art of metal smithing.
In 2001 Nancy opened Mendocino Jewelry Studio, on Main Street in Mendocino, where she exhibits her original, hand fabricated jewelry along with 12 other prominent local jewelers.
