Have you ever changed the brushes in your flex shaft? Are you properly greasing your rolling mill? In this two-day workshop we will cover how to clean and lube the shaft, and change the brushes, how to keep your rolling mill in new condition and a forever tool and many other equipment maintenance questions. Want to customize a hammer? Resurface your planishing hammer? We will carve, harden and temper a hand-made tool steel texturstamp, which will demonstrate proper surface treatment and review the basics of tempering and hardening tool steel.
In this workshop we will also review studio set-up and many of the various pieces of equipment that you may have or are questioning what you need. Some of the questions that will be answered are: What’s the difference between a flex shaft and micromotor? How to pick what kind of torch that you’ll need? What’s the difference between a precision pulse arc welder and a laser welder and what can they do for you? What are the differences between various buffing compounds and options in buffing wheels and rubberized abrasives? Plus, lots more answers revealed. Come prepared with questions!
The Susan E. Wood Jewelry Studio is available for use for a fee the days following your workshop should you like to continue practicing new skills or finish projects started in class. For more details or to schedule extra workdays, please contact Nancy Gardner, Jewelry/Metal Arts Coordinator.
