CLASS DESCRIPTION
Discover how creative free-motion machine stitching can be the focus of or add dimension, texture or even structure to your fiber art.

Learn the basics by dropping your feed dogs and, using free-motion machine stitching to create visual and textural effects on fabric. Discover how liberating it is to stitch “free-style” and “draw” on fabric. You will follow your own design instincts while developing free-motion stitching skills that you can use in traditional quilting, art quilts and other stitched projects. During the workshop you will begin building a “Stitch Library” while practicing stitching exercises that you will keep as a permanent reference tool (and which you can add to over time).

Techniques explored will be Thread Sketching, Thread Painting, Textural, Dimensional and Structural Stitching which will help you develop confidence in continuous, improvisational, free-motion stitching including the challenge of how to get to where you want to go in your design – ideally without stopping.

The goal of this workshop is to learn how to let your creative instincts emerge as you stitch and develop good free-motion habits that work for you. Skill level: Students must know how to sew.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
LINDA V. HUBBARD’s “mission” is to explore the myriad of techniques that can be used as tools to create with cloth and thread. Her interest in art (music study in Europe and a BA Degree in Art – concentration Ceramics) was always important but blossomed when she discovered quilting in the 1990’s. She taught herself the basics of traditional quilting and soon found herself experimenting with many non-traditional techniques such as Fabric Manipulation, Insertion, Dimension, Raw Edge Applique, Rust Dyeing, Screen Printing, Stamping and Stenciling and has most recently been working with the Discharge Dyeing process to create interesting and unpredictable designs on fabric. In working with these more abstract designs she has found that free-motion stitching techniques have become a more important component in her artwork adding depth, dimension, texture and even three-dimensional effects.

Linda is a resident of Benicia, California, and has participated in many Bay Area Art Fairs over the years. She is a member of Arts Benicia, the Fairfield Suisun City Visual Arts Association and the Vacaville Art League and Gallery, and has been juried into many of their exhibits. Recently she was a featured guest artist at the Blackhawk Gallery in Danville, California, and was selected to participate in the 2018 annual “Material Matters” exhibit at the Seager Gray Gallery in Mill Valley.

Fiber Art in Linda’s view is constantly evolving as more techniques are developed and more rules are broken which she thinks will result in more exciting artworks to come.
