A two-day course giving participants an opportunity to paint still life on wooden gesso boards in the tradition of Dutch and Spanish artists in the 17th and 18th centuries. Participants will be working with oils, painting a choice of objects including fruit and vegetables. Over two days participants will learn the whole process of painting still life from the preparation of the gesso boards, working with oil paints, selecting objects and deciding on image composition. The gesso boards will range from 8-10 square inches in size. At the end of two days participants will be able to take home their individual paintings.

I was born in Boston in 1947 into a large artistic family, where our toys were paints, paintbrushes and pencils. I am a self-taught artist specializing in medieval painting in the UK and Italy. I developed my oil painting skills through further study of still life paintings of Dutch and Spanish artists in the 17th and 18th centuries. I was intrigued by the dark mysterious backgrounds. Eventually, I became more interested in the shape of the spaces between the objects, so not over embellishing like the Old Masters were prone to. To me the space and the background is almost more important in contrast to the color and light of the object. I feel that one or two objects can be more effective in a still life study. I mainly work with fruit and vegetables as it’s always around my kitchen and I have time to study them in all their glory.
