Imagine creating wearable art by working with beautiful vitreous (glass) enamel colors fired on fine silver. We will texture (using stamps or burs) and dome a fine silver disc to prepare our surface for the cloisonné enamel design. After proper preparation of the fine silver disc we’ll create designs using fine silver wires which are shaped with pliers, fingers and steel mandrills. Once the wires are fixed in place, we begin work filling the cells with color. Learning the properties of certain colors and how they need to be applied; the order of applying and firing colors, using leaded vs. unleaded enamel, duration of firings, and the three stages of firing enamel will be covered in depth which is crucial for successful enameling. We will cover color blending, the layering of colors, application of 24k gold foil and the beauty of using transparent enamels. After stoning the enamels with various papers and stones, we fire the enamel for the final time resulting in a unique enamel “jewel.” If you choose to work with the ¾” fine silver disc, I will be supplying a finished gallery wire setting with bail for your cloisonné “jewel” which we will set for a finished pendant to take home.
The Susan E. Wood Jewelry Studio is available for use for a fee the days following your workshop should you like to continue practicing new skills or finish projects started in class. For more details or to schedule extra workdays, please contact Nancy Gardner, Jewelry/Metal Arts Coordinator.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
I have an art education degree from New York University and a Jewelry Design degree from Fashion Institute of Technology and have had the pleasure of teaching jewelry classes for over 35 years. After leaving school, I worked for two years in a top jewelry company, Oscar Heyman, in an all-male-shop to learn my fabrication skills. I have supported myself for 45 years using my model making, enameling and fabrication skills to create one-of-a-kind custom orders and limited edition jewelry that I have exhibited at top shows including the American Crafts council shows at San Francisco, Baltimore, and Minneapolis, in addition to the designer section of the Jewelers Circular Keystone Show in Las Vegas and appearing on television for two years to sell my jewelry. Many of my designs have been publicized in magazines and books including Jewelers Circular Keystone, National Jewelers Magazine and The World Gold Council Trends book. I won the Intergold Contest second prize for a cufflink design.
