In this workshop we will be fabricating a sterling silver wide band ring with a cabochon stone. The aesthetic of layering sheet and wire is intriguing and appears complicated and elaborate, but is in fact a simple and basic process. Adding texture and the use of patinas enhances the sense of depth and adds a medieval quality, as does the use of a cabochon stone. This ring is built on a “cuff” format – making it easily adjustable and more comfortable for the wearer. Not only will you be adding a beautiful piece to your jewelry collection you will be honing your fabrication skills and picking up great tips and tricks for a vastly accomplished silver Smith!

The Susan E. Wood Jewelry Studio is available for use for a fee the days following your workshop should you like to continue practicing new skills or finish projects started in class. For more details or to schedule extra workdays, please contact Nancy Gardner, Jewelry/Metal Arts Coordinator.

In my late teens I was working in industrial welding and sheet metal fabrication, which then led me into creating functional sculpture. Thirty-seven years ago, after five sessions at an adult ed beginning jewelry class, I became a full-time silversmith and jeweler. Initially I worked with galleries and did the craft fair, art festival circuit where I received numerous awards and prizes. I have teapots in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Museum and the Oakland Museum of California. Currently, I am mostly teaching and enjoy sharing metal smithing techniques that I have honed for 50 years.
