What’s the difference between great photographs and all the others? They are unforgettable. This class is about creating that great photo that not only captures the moment, but one that will give you the feeling of accomplishment and will stick in your viewers’ memory.

We will focus on the four components of doing that:
1. The subject – capturing something new or portraying it in a way no one has seen before.

2. Creating an emotional impact – awe, provocation, humor – something that grabs the viewer. Your photo must not be boring!

3. Composition: The components of your photo should draw the eye into the photo and keep it there.

4. Photographic excellence. The photographer needs to use good lighting and have command of the ingredients that make a high-quality image – exposure, focus, depth of field, color management, contrast.

The class will give the student practice in integrating these four components while photographing scenes, people and still lives. You will do portraits using natural and strobe lighting, some street photography and landscape photography in beautiful Mendocino. We will review your photos with the class and learn how well you are doing in meeting the big four.

Theater, circus, wildlife, portraits, glamour, scenery, still life, street photography, collage and whatever strikes his fancy: LARRY R WAGNER is an eclectic photographer. But there is a common theme for all that he does – a foundation, commonality and style inherent in all his work. Larry’s photographs are an affirmation of the majesty of the moment. He wants his photography to do what no other art can do. What is common in his images is that they capture a moment as only photography can. The objective of the portrayed moment is to emotionally affect his viewers, hold their attention and bring them back for more looks. His photographic image is not an emulation of a painting nor should it be. It is a photograph.

A professional photographer since 2006, he was a founder of the Mendocino Coast Guild and Gallery and his work has been displayed in many venues on the coast including Mendocino Art Center, where he had a one month show in October 2016, Highlight Gallery, Oddfellows Gallery, Saving Bank of Mendocino, Edgewater Gallery, Brewery Gulch Inn and Beachcomber Motel. He specializes in portrait, publicity, performance and portfolio photography. He is well known for his photos of Mendocino Center for Circus Arts performers and MeCCAs’ annual calendar, and Mendocino Theatre Company and Gloriana Musical Theatre publicity, program and lobby shots. Larry juried the recent 2016 Members’ Juried Photography Exhibit at the Mendocino Art Center.

Larry has created photo books of his work. He published two volumes of Artists of the Mendocino Coast, the second of which is in the Mendocino Library. He also published a third volume, entitled Mendocino Coast Artists, with stunning black and white portraits of 56 artists. His other books include Mendocino County Mobile Memento, the photo chronicle of the creation of the Skunk Train’s Art Car; Look At Us, We’re Beautiful – Glamour is not just for Hollywood, a collection of images of local women; Saloonachicks, images of the women who patronize the Saloon, the oldest bar in San Francisco, founded by his Larry’s great-great grandfather in 1861 (available on Amazon); and Spirit of Dance, images of young ballet students. His most famous photo is the Fort Bragg 70-ton Blue Whale beaching, an image picked up by the Associated Press and sent around the world.
